New resource - My online course to help first time managers!
No new post from me this week - but I wanted to drop readers a message about a new course I’ve created to help meet the needs of new managers.
Managers have it tougher than they did in the past
Transitioning to a role where you have to manage people has always been tricky - but it’s become much harder over the last 15 years:
Organisations have become much flatter & teams autonomy has become more important resulting in more “manager to manager” interfacing
The flatter organisations also mean that people typically become managers later in their careers, so don’t have as much time to learn how to manage
In modern companies, managers are often expected to be “player-coaches” which increases their fragmentation & makes it harder for them to prioritise time for planning or people development
All of this means that managers (especially first time managers) are playing crucial roles without the right level of experience, training or support to perform as well as they would like.
Companies need managers to do a better job
Having a set of high performing managers is particularly important because:
The flat company structures mean managers are single points of failure for many companies
Managers are one of the employee groups most likely to be burned out and/or disengaged
Finally, having an unsupportive or ineffective manager is associated with a 23% increase in employee churn in professional services companies and tech companies
Our new manager training can help!
One way you can provide support to these managers is by offering really effective training - to help them cut through some of the painful trial and error that is normally required to learn to manage teams effectively. I’ve just launched an online training programme designed for people who have recently become managers (or have been managers for a relatively short amount of time).
You can access the online training course HERE.
What’s in it: It includes 8 separate chapters each covering a separate aspect of being a manager, with a total of more than 2 hours of short form video content and a range of practical exercises to try out with your teams. It’s all designed to be absorbed in 30-minute weekly sessions for around 2 months.
How much does it cost: The course is priced at £250 per person, well below the typical market rate for this kind of course. And for that price you also get 2x 30-minute 1-to-1 calls with me to help coach you through the recommendations. Please note this price is an early access offer and it will increase at the end of May to £400 per person.
If you are a manager - check if your learning team will approve access to this course! It’s designed to fit well within a typical company’s individual learning budget.
If you are part of your company’s leadership or people team, drop me an email (Isar@uncover.business) if you would like to have a conversation about how best to set up managers for success.
